FTC Against Net Neutrality – This is Getting Scary

This issue is somewhat off topic for this site, but it is too important not to bring up. There are more and more signs that Net Neutrality is losing support in US governmental circles. Recently, there has been a very good discussion on this blog about free speech – specifically on the internet. Net Neutrality would ensure that free speech and access to information would be safeguarded for all users (at least in the US). Without Net Neutrality, large telecoms could essentially decide what users can and cannot view – the consequences of this are potentially crippling.

Why Silverlight Should Fail

Silverlight has been quite the buzz around the internet lately. Microsoft’s new product explicitly takes aim at Flash as they try to take on the rich media arena. Up to this point, Flash has basically stood alone at the top as the rich media standard for the browser. I will explain why, from my point of view, I do not see Silverlight changing that reality any time in the near (or far) future.

My Favorite Typography Blogs

It has been a (very long) while since I written about design at all on this blog. In order to ease myself back into the design subject, I thought I would post some of my favorite typography blogs that I have found. I have come across some pretty hot typefaces through my browsing these sites – I know we are always itching to find that font family that will allow us to default back to Helvetica/Garamond. Font design is such an amazing craft in my opinion, that I enjoy looking at new typographic designs/trends whether I am looking for a new font or not.

Here is my list (in no particular order):

Please, do add to this list – I am dying to get some new sites to gawk at.

Time Displacement Video

I usually do not post YouTube videos on Some Random Dude, but this definitely warranted an exception. I am unsure of the method towards this effect, but it is one of the creepiest, yet visually stunning treatments to video I have seen since those video sequences The Matrix made famous (and subsequently ran into the ground). This is well worth a view… Not to mention a second.

Hey Stumblers, thanks for coming on by. If you liked this article, you might like two video projects I did here and here.

Social News an Upgrade From an Old-News-Only World

A while back, I read a very interesting article debating the validity of social news sites. There is no denying that the old media machine is beginning to sputter – most notably newspapers. New media has begun to pull visitors away from traditional news outlets with free access to news, less advertising (sometimes) and features unique to the internet such as voting, discussing and recommending. Getting news on the internet is not, well, news at all, however social news is starting to catch on. By catching on, I do not mean our generation, we have been well aware of it for some time – I mean that the larger mainstream is slowly starting to hear whispers of such an idea. The interesting thing is that many people are trying to pit traditional news against social news – as if “there can be only one”. Rather, social news is a great addition to the genre of news which will only improve the public’s access to information.
